SCLEROTHERAPY FOR SPIDER VEINS AND RETICULAR VEINS

  • What are spider veins and reticular veins?

Spider veins are fine superficial veins seen in the skin of legs. Spider veins are less than 1mm and reticular veins are 1-3mm in size. They may be associated with varicose veins or they may be seen without any underlying varicose veins.  Spider veins are common in women. If there are no associated varicose veins, they may not be treated. Usual reasons for treatment are bleeding, itching, burning sensation, pain and associated varicose veins.

  • What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a procedure where by doctors injects medicine in small veins to close them.

  • How is sclerotherapy done?

SVRV

Sclerotherapy is performed in a clinic. The affected area is cleansed. The solution is injected directly into veins with fine needle. The number of veins injected in one session will be variable. You may need one to three sessions.

  • How will I feel?

Mild discomfort like ant bite may occur when the veins are injected.

  • How long will the treatment last?

The procedure takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

  • What are the side effects of sclerotherapy?

It include mild allergy, brown line for few months along the treated veins. Mild discomfort in the treated veins. Severe reactions are rare.

  • What happens after the treatment?

You may resume your regular activities and are encouraged to walk.
The tapes at the puncture site can be removed after 24 hrs.
Support stockings are to be worn continuously for 2 days then from morning to evening for 2 months
For 48 hours after the procedure, please follow these guidelines:

  • Avoid aspirin.
  • Do not take hot baths
  • Do not apply hot compresses
  • Avoid direct exposure to sunlight (including sun tanning and tanning beds)
