What is a Venous Malformation?

It is abnormality of the veins which are in born. The veins are swollen and if malformations  are superficial, these can be seen as blue nodular swelling. If these malformations are on exposed portions of the body giving ugly marks on the body.

These venous malformation may be hidden in muscles or bones. In such cases, it will be seen as swelling which increase or decrease in size. These are usually diagnosed on sonography of veins. MRI scan is required to know the extent and spread of disease.

What problems can these malformations cause?

These cause disfigurement, pain, itching or restriction of movement. If they superficial., these malformations can bleed.

How can they be treated?

  • These abnormalities if they are small and cause no symptom or disfigurement they may be left alone.
  • If there is indication for treatment, then they are treated by injection of sclerosant under X ray or sonography guidance. Injection of sclerosant into vein is called sclerotherapy. Multiple sclerotherapy sessions may be required.
Some malformations may be treated in addition with laser or surgery as required.
